Fancy Franks is a chain of family diner food that’s cheap. If you’re looking for a hot dog, it’s a cut above the rest.

Fancy Franks is about the hot dog
Primarily, Fancy Franks is known for it’s gourmet hot dogs. Their frankfurters are all made in house, as well, they do their own fresh donuts, ice cream, milkshakes, poutine, and hamburgers. The combinations are interesting, from Frankie Goes to Buffalo, a blue-cheese dressing combined with buffalo wing sauce, to a Southern Fancy, which uses BBQ pulled pork and cabbage slaw. (I tried the Frankie Goes to Buffalo and the Franks Got Seoul.)
The location I went to was on College, and it’s quite an eclectic, friendly street, with all sorts of characters and interesting shops and restaurants. At the time, the weather wasn’t quite summer, though they do have a picnic table right on street level. This place is perfect for families with kids, those who would love some cinnamon covered donuts, a quick ice cream cone or cup, or even just a strawberry milkshake to go (yes, I had one. And some cinnamon donuts…)
More than just hot dogs
One large menu list is the poutine. Now I’m no fan of it, but when you have something like a Fancy Schmancy, which involves Korean Beef Ribs & Squeaky Curds, it does make you curious. There’s also a Double American Cheeseburger, where you can choose to build your own, from quite a numerous list of toppings. Other things like onion rings, fries and sausages are definitely present.
Service
One thing I did notice, while awaiting for the donuts to be done, the person who took my order delivered them to me. It’s a small, but long store. Instead of waiting for my dog like most would (there’s a line up like most places.) It was a nice surprise.
Would I recommend it?
Can’t say I’m too fluent when it comes to hot dogs, whether bought in a restaurant or on the street. There are some amazing restaurants on College, so this would have to be a for a younger party, or a quick bite, or a simple milkshake to go. I personally don’t really have another urge to check out the rest of the menu. But if it’s for something quick, cheap, and a little twist on a hot dog, I’d say check it out.
